Local Giants — the leadership book by Louise Vangestel

By Louise Vangestel · Founder & CEO, Regional Advantage Group · Creator of the Indigenous Commercial Readiness Index (ICRI) · 30+ years across regional business, infrastructure, procurement & supplier capability

Most business advice celebrates growth. Local Giants is about what growth actually costs.

And how to scale without eroding the trust, relationships and identity that made you successful in the first place.

About the book

What happens when a business outgrows the way it was built.

Local Giants is a leadership book for owners, executives and board members building businesses in regional and non-metropolitan environments — places where decisions are personal, reputations are durable, and success can't be separated from community, culture or legacy.

It isn't a book of formulas or generic leadership advice. It looks honestly at what really happens when an organisation grows beyond its original scale: the tension when ambition meets accountability, when governance meets history, and when expansion begins to threaten the very values, relationships and identity that made the business successful.

Written from lived experience across boardrooms, family enterprises and complex regional environments, it challenges the modern assumptions that growth is always good, faster is always better, and scale is the ultimate measure of success.

  • What does responsible growth actually look like?
  • How do leaders balance opportunity with restraint?
  • How do you build scale without eroding trust?
  • How do you grow while keeping what matters?

The author

Why Louise Vangestel wrote Local Giants.

30+ years' experience Founder & CEO, Regional Advantage Group Creator of ICRI

Local Giants is written from the inside.

Louise Vangestel has spent more than 30 years at the intersection of regional business, infrastructure, government procurement, supplier capability, Indigenous participation and commercial growth — as the founder of Regional Advantage Group and the creator of ICRI.

She has sat on both sides of the table — helping buyers raise the bar on supplier readiness and procurement outcomes, and helping suppliers build the capability and evidence to meet it. That work spans boardrooms, family enterprises and some of the most complex delivery environments in the country.

Local Giants distils what that experience taught her: the businesses that endure aren't the ones that grow fastest, but the ones that grow deliberately — without losing the trust, culture and relationships that made them matter.

About Regional Advantage Group

The company behind Local Giants.

Regional Advantage Group exists to close the gap between commitment and outcome in regional business and major-project participation. We help capable businesses and regions become genuinely ready to participate, qualify and win — and we help buyers see that readiness with confidence.

We do that through practical mentoring, capability development and readiness support, and through the platforms we build — including ICRI, the Indigenous Commercial Readiness Index. Local Giants is part of the same mission: turning hard-won commercial experience into resources that help leaders and suppliers build businesses that last.

Where others produce reports, Regional Advantage Group builds the infrastructure, programs and capability that make participation real.

Beyond the book · The Supplier Readiness Program

Fourteen workbooks. Delivered, not downloaded.

Local Giants is backed by a fourteen-part companion framework — structured implementation workbooks that take suppliers from insight to action across strengths, direction, foundations, finance, leadership, innovation, brand, supply chain, customer growth, resilience, mentorship and long-term readiness.

These workbooks are exclusive. They are not sold, and they are not publicly available to download. They are delivered progressively to eligible suppliers as guided resources within the Regional Advantage Group Supplier Readiness Program — released at the right stage of each supplier's mentoring and readiness journey, so the work builds in the right order.

The result isn't a pile of PDFs. It's a structured, mentored path from reading the book to becoming genuinely buyer-ready.
